PIC OF THE WEEK: 03/27/17 • PREVIOUS WEEKALL 2017 PICSNEXT WEEK

Where: Richmond, VA
Notes: Birds, like this Robin, utilize water in numerous ways. One of which is for hygiene. Taking a bath can wash off unwanted parasites, such as ticks, mites or fleas. It can also cleanse their feathers and body of debris such as dirt, spider webs and pollen. Bathing can acts as a pre-soaking, prior to preening as they maintain their feathers for insulation and flight. Most birds spend a good portion of their day engaged in such grooming activities. Keeping their feathers in the best possible condition is essential to survival and efficient flight. After months of flying around, feathers can become worn or broken as well. Bird banding researchers can use both flight feather ware and plumage as indicators of a particular species age when closely inspected. In the breeding season, most birds that incubate eggs, loose the feathers on center of their belly and develop a brood patch. This bare patch allows direct contact with eggs and helps the embryos grow faster. That bare skin is covered with a higher density of blood vessels, which allow the maximum transfer of heat from their body. When off the nest, the feathers surrounding the edge of that spot, keep it covered and protected. Some birds, like Crows and Grackles, even use water to wash or soak their food. Thus water can be a vital resource to all birds in many different ways.

THE BIRD SPA

The Simple Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Has ATTRACTED 80 DIFFERENT SPECIES at a single location in central Virginia!
