PIC OF THE WEEK: 04/03/17 • PREVIOUS WEEKALL 2017 PICSNEXT WEEK

Where: Richmond, VA • Glidewell Rd.
Notes: This image expresses the importance of cleanliness in a dynamic way. From flapping its wings repeatedly into the water, the splashes of water droplets spray out and so does dirt, spider webs, pollen, and potential parasites off its body. But even with its plumage clean, there is still desire for this stunning male Towhee to presoak its feathers a bit before preening. By running its loose gripped bill across its feathers from top to bottom, it not also ensures the further removal of debris, but also realigns each feathers sublayers. Its like pulling the handle back up on an open zipper. This preening motion is especially important to its wing feathers, to ensure efficient flight. With spring fast approaching, it will be important for this guy to look his best and hopefully attract a mate for the season.
