PIC OF THE WEEK: 04/17/17 • PREVIOUS WEEKALL 2017 PICSNEXT WEEK

Where: Beaverdam, VA
Notes: The Killdeer is one of our few inland sandpipers. Additions to that short list also include the American Woodcock and the Common Snipe. Killdeer also differ because they prefer a dry habitat. A couple of other species are present locally during periods of migration along riverbanks and in flooded fields, such as the Spotted and Solitary Sandpipers. Most other members of this group of birds are typically found along our coastal beaches and marshes. As most plovers do, they prefer to nest in open areas right on the ground. Sometimes nests are surrounded with short vegetation, while others have none at all, as in this case. They create a shallow bowl shaped depression on the ground and line it with short pieces of grass, where they lay around four to six eggs. Incubation lasts about 4 weeks and the chicks can walk within a few minutes after hatching and begin forging for insects. They search the area for bugs and flying insects, instead of probing the mud and sandy beaches, like most sandpipers.
