PIC OF THE WEEK: 05/22/17 • PREVIOUS WEEKALL 2017 PICSNEXT WEEK

Where: Richmond, VA
Notes: Spring migration was one of the most unusual, compared to my observations from recent years. The birdbath is regularly visited by an average of a dozen or more Yellow-rumped Warblers, eight to twelve Blackpoll Warblers, a few Common Yellowthroats and American Redstarts, plus single occurrences of a mixture of other spring species such as: Black-throated Green, Black and White, Black-throated Blue Warblers and others throughout the period. Even some of the slightly larger migratory birds like Rose-breasted Grosbeak and Swanson’s Thrush stop by for a bath. This all has typically happened in a fairly dense timeframe of two to three weeks, starting the last week of April and lasting until about mid May. This season only a few visitors showed up. Less species and fewer individuals too. Since the peak period passed, there has been an unusually late migrants in the area too. This female breeding plumage Magnolia Warbler arrived a full two weeks after the typical tome period. Just yesterday, a Prairie Warbler sang a couple of rounds in the backyard, also about three weeks tardy. A majority of these birds are already at their breeding territories for the season. Perhaps it’s the shift in climate or the high degree of temperature swings we had earlier this spring that has caused such a disruption. Perhaps the largest mass of migratory birds simply passed over this area at night and landed north of here? Either way something was very different about this spring.

THE BIRD SPA

The Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Has ATTRACTED 80 DIFFERENT SPECIES at a single location in central Virginia!
