PIC OF THE WEEK: 05/29/17 • PREVIOUS WEEKALL 2017 PICSNEXT WEEK

Where: Richmond, VA • Glidewell Rd.
Notes: The Black-Throated Blue is one of my favorite wood warblers. Its black face, throat and side striping contrast with its snowy white breast and cerulean-blue back, making it a particularly lovely bird. About once every other year or so, my backyard birdbath is graced with this beauty. About half of the time it is a female who visits the Bird Spa. The male and females are so different looking, they were originally described as two entirely different species. Both genders have a distinctive white triangular patch about mid-way up their primary feathers. This is a great identification mark, because they are almost the only species that has that particular marking. They also keep the same looking plumage all year, also making them easy to ID. They breed along the Appalachian Mountain range all the way up into the northeastern United States. Nearly all of them migrate south to the Caribbean Islands and Central America each winter where they forage for insects. With only a few migratory visitors at the birdbath this spring, I am glad this guy was one of them.

THE BIRD SPA

The Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Over seventy-five plus species attracted at a single location in central Virginia.
