PIC OF THE WEEK: 06/12/17 • PREVIOUS WEEKALL 2017 PICSNEXT WEEK

Where: Richmond, VA • Glidewell Rd.
Notes: The Gray Catbird is the third member of the mimic family which also includes the Northern Mockingbird and the Brown Thrasher. Like their closest relatives, they have long songs that sometimes last up to ten minutes long. They are pretty much all slate gray birds, except for a black cap and a patch of rufus-rusty feathers under their tail. I especially like the strong profile pose of this bird at the Bird Spa as it portrays the action of drinking. Most birds can not draw water straight up their beak like a straw. Instead they have to scoop the water up in their bill, then lift their head up and let gravity trickle it down their throat. This species has nested in the Ligustrum hedge in our Richmond, Virginia backyard for many years. Since they primarily eat insects and fruit, we only see them in the warmer months here in the Commonwealth. I often put a half of an orange on the platform feeder just for them. It is always a special treat each spring when the first sighting reveals their safe return to our little backyard oasis.

THE BIRD SPA

The Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Over seventy-five plus species attracted at a single location in central Virginia.
