PIC OF THE WEEK: 01/23/17 • PREVIOUS WEEKALL 2017 PICSNEXT WEEK

Where: Richmond, VA
Notes: Another snowy scene from or last snow a couple of weeks ago. The Blue Jay’s latin name roughly translates into “dark blue crested” and are in the same family as Magpies and Crows. Their crest is a crown of feathers that can be raised and lowered. Allegedly, this can determine its mood. When fully raised means excited or aggrieve, sticking straight back means frightened, and flat when calm or is feeding. It seems calm, when drinking too. Jays are curious and considered intelligent amongst birds. They benefit other birds by sounding the alarm when predators are in the area and imitate a large variety of sounds, especially the cries of local hawks. They are resident breeding birds primarily in the eastern half of the United states. Blue Jays pairs are typically monogamous and in most cases mate for life. The male and female both build their nest and raise the chicks. The female exclusively incubates the eggs and the male feeds her during such times. These birds eat primarily nuts, seeds, acorns and a little fruit and will sometimes cache their food. Not only are they beautiful, but are quite talented as well.

THE BIRD SPA

The Simple Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Has ATTRACTED 80 DIFFERENT SPECIES at a single location in central Virginia!
