PIC OF THE WEEK: 02/20/17 • PREVIOUS WEEKALL 2017 PICSNEXT WEEK

Where: Chesapeak Bay, VA • Dockside Fishing Center Boat
Notes: What feels like a bit of an unusual pose for a Northern Gannet, is what I find most appealing about this image. After decades of watching these amazing seabirds flapping and gliding against a stiff ocean breeze, it almost seems odd to see one floating on the surface so peacefully. These seabirds are well known for their spectacular high-diving acrobatics, often plummeting from thirty feet or more high. In a dive their spear-like bill pierces the water and their wings fold back as they torpedo deep into the sea. They are know to swim as deep as seventy feet. Recent underwater cinematography has shown how well they can maneuver underwater as well, using their wings and feet to propel them along in pursuit of small fish and squid. I never get tired of watching them dive.
