PIC OF THE WEEK: 03/26/18 • PREVIOUS WEEKALL 2018 PICSNEXT WEEK

Where: Richmond, VA
Notes: This image felt like a bit of a “blast from the past,” though this picture was captured just a couple of days ago. It is similar to an image that became a driving inspiration in my nature photography efforts for years to come. The previous photograph was also a pair of Cedar Waxwings at a small puddle of water. That was twelve years ago in Bedford County, VA. Attracting birds with water is the subject of a program that I have presented at dozens of birding and gardening organizations for over a decade now. It has inspired thousands of hours of observation and thousands of photographs. Response to the program also sparked the printing of a DIY instruction booklet that shows others how to install this little water feature. That booklet now has over seven hundred copies in circulation. Two years ago a forty-six minute long DVD was developed, showing a mixture of both stills and video footage, plus the addition of birdsongs leased for the production from Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Macauley Library. To me, this demonstrates how a little inspiration can go a long way.

THE BIRD SPA

The Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Has ATTRACTED 80 DIFFERENT SPECIES at a single location in central Virginia!
