PIC OF THE WEEK: 04/09/18 • PREVIOUS WEEKALL 2018 PICSNEXT WEEK

Where: Richmond, VA
Notes: Though winter does not want to give up easily this spring, but nature presses forward in action anyway. These amazing birds are some of the latest nesting in the region. The rest of the year they travel in multi generational flocks until they pair off in the breeding season. Some flocks are just around a dozen, others are much larger. Sometimes the groups are mixed with other fruit-eating species, such as the American Robin and the Eastern Bluebird. These particular birds have been in the area for the last two weeks trying to steal the last few berries off a Holly Tree in the front yard. They are the last winter reserve of a local Northern Mockingbird. It has been the sole guardian of that corner since late fall. The Privet and Pyracantha fruit has diminished over the winter and is now completely gone. So the Mockingbird has defended its cash more feverishly that ever and it has done so quite successfully. Soon other fruit, such as Mahonia, will become ripe and the Waxwings will find that as well.

THE BIRD SPA

The Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Has ATTRACTED 80 DIFFERENT SPECIES at a single location in central Virginia!
