Where: Richmond, VA • Glidewell Rd. Notes: This little bird is truly a seasonal thermometer. This six and three-quarter inch long sparrow shows up each year in the the late fall here in the mid-atlantic, around the time that the first frost forms on the newly fallen leaves. Preferring cooler climates, they stay through out the chilly winter days and frigid nights. To survive, they search the forest floors and beneath the Honeysuckle thickets for seeds and small insects. Just as spring approaches, their plumage takes on a new brilliance and clarity. Their soft cascading whistles begin to fill the air and soon they will depart to their breeding grounds in the northern United States and Canada. Each year this cycle reminds me that Spring is on its way. |
