This Cedar Waxwing was caught in mid-flap, as it was only half a wing beat from takeoff. It had stopped by the heated backyard birdbath during one of the many snowfalls we had last winter.

Category: Birds Of A Feather - "Bathing Beauty" - Honorable Mention
At the first sighting of this little guy hovering over and them landing in the water, I was astonished. There had been one or two
Hummingbirds at my garden flowers and nectar feeders before, but never in the birdbath. Fortunately this little male “Hummer”
also came by the next couple of days at about the same time in the morning. On the third day I had the camera ready and
the result was this photo. The addition of the water droplet on his beak was just a lucky bonus.
Equipment: Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Lens: Canon 400mm f-5.6 USM, Shutter Release Cable & Tripod.
Settings: ISO 1600, Shutter Speed 1/160, Aperture f/5.6 |
Category: A Bug’s Life - "Black Swallowtail Butterfly Emerged" - Third Place
We were delighted to find a batch of Black Swallowtail caterpillars clung to the parsley in our herb garden. We protected them
from predators with a net and a couple of them pupated. Finally it was a real treat to witness one of them hatch into an adult.
Equipment: Canon EOS 5D Mark III, Lens: Canon 400mm f-5.6 USM, Canon 25mm Extension Tube, tripod.
Settings: ISO 400, Shutter Speed 1/320, Aperture f/11.
