NATIONAL AWARD - Top 10 - Video Category
2021 National Audubon Photography Awards
I am honored to have received this recognition from this prestigious national competition. Here is the story–having photographed this flock of Cedar Waxwings over the previous couple of days at "The BirdSpa," I had captured plenty of still shots, that I was very happy with. Then, I noticed the flock dropping down to the birdbath once again. After the first few birds arrived, it seemed nothing would stop the rest of the group from their thirsty mission. So I grabbed my camera, tripod and a beach towel and laid down with my elbows on the grass, about 15 feet away from the “Bird Spa.” Then, I threw the towel over my head, to act as a blind. In that moment, I decided to switch over to video mode. Within just a few minutes, a single Waxwing dropped to the water’s edge, and then a few more followed, then more and more came. In and out they continued. I ended up shooting about half a dozen videos over the next hour.

North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) Awards 2019
NATIONAL AWARD - BEST IN SHOW - Mammals Category
This was my second big national award selected from 3,600 entries and out of nearly 400 photographers. Blessed again. It is a true honor to be included in such an amazing group of dedicated nature photographers who have the same passion for wildlife. While I will always be a bird photographer at heart, other opportunities to capture nature’s beauty often cross my path. Or in this case, next to the path. Wildlife is often repetitive in its actions, having seen this Red Fox travel the same track a couple of times, I though it might do so again. It did, and this image was the result, running as it returned with several Voles in its mouth. He was on his way back to feed his hungry kits in the den. Photographed in Lake Clark National Park, Alaska. Special thanks to judges: Melissa Groo, George Lepp, and Joe and Mary Ann McDonald. Thanks to Wendy Shattil - Showcase Coordinator, John Lock - Showcase Web Developer; and to Teresa Ransdell - Project Manager for your dedication and hard work on this contest. VISIT: www.nanpa.org

National Audubon Society Photography Awards 2018
NATIONAL AWARD - Top 100
#11 of over 8,000 ENTRIES - Amazed and Blessed to have this image included in the 2018 National Audubon Society’s Annual Photography Awards. Entries are from all fifty states, Washington D.C., plus ten Canadian provinces. The contest includes both professional and amateur photographers alike. The top one hundred represents less than one-tenth of one percent of the more than eight thousand entries! Since I don’t typically enter many competitions, this recognition is extra special; plus I only entered one photo! My guess was that this would make a good entry, since the Great Egret is part of the National Audubon Society’s logo. In the past, wading birds were hunted for their beautiful plumes and feathers to make fashionable women’s hats. Many species were brought to the brink of extinction in the late 1800’s here in the United States. But it was the grass roots efforts of two Boston, Massachusetts women, Harriet Hemenway and Minna Hall, that first revolted against the greedy slaughter. Their rejection to such practices, eventually became the start of the National Association of Audubon Societies for the Protection of Wild Birds and Animals, incorporated in 1905. The name was shortened to the National Audubon Society in 1940 and there are nearly five hundred chapters at this time. Special thanks to the judges: Kenn Kaufman (Bird-guide author and Audubon field editor), Melissa Groo (Professional photographer and 2015 Grand Prize winner), Steve Freligh (Co-publisher of Nature's Best Photography), Allen Murabayashi (Chairman and co-founder, PhotoShelter), and Sabine Meyer (Audubon photography director) for selection my work to be included in this prestigious competition.

Crozet Fall Arts & Crafts Festival 2024
People's Choice Award - Third Place
Awarded third place “People's Choice” Award at the fall Crozet Arts and Crafts Festival. This has become one of my favorite show venues of all, primarily because I consistently meet some of the most genuinely kind people of anywhere I exhibit. Thanks to everyone who made the show one of my most successful events of the year, especially the repeat buyers. Most of all thanks to those who took the effort to vote for me, because I am a relatively new vendor at this event. I am already looking forward to Mother's Day weekend next year for the spring art festival.

Chincoteague Island Decoy & Art Festival 2024
Best Photograph of Chincoteague/Assateague Award
This award was a great way to start the spring exhibition season! Thanks so much to the Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce for this honor and for recognizing my work. This local group is a nonprofit organization that promotes the much needed tourism, which feeds a majority of all of the local businesses. Having been a small business owner my self since 1996, I admire and appreciate their efforts. They get very little financial support from the government, so they run special events to support their efforts. The Easter Decoy Festival is only one of their annual events. Others include the Chincoteague Seafood Festival, the Annual Pony Swim. Chincoteague has been one of my favorite places since my childhood, and still is to this day.

Crozet Fall Arts & Crafts Festival 2023
People's Choice Award - Second Place
Awarded second place “People's Choice” Award at my first fall exhibition at the Crozet Arts and Crafts Festival. Crozet, Virginia is a quaint, charming community, that reminds me of years past of living in rural Bedford County, VA. Thanks to the attendees for their kind words, throughout the beautiful fall weekend. Special thanks to those parents who have clearly raised their children to love and respect nature. I love it when I see multi-generations of families walking together and youngsters exploring the park in freedom. Thanks all to my return customers from the spring show who came by, whether to add to your decor or just to visit, I appreciate the warm welcome.

Lazy Daze 2023
Best in Show Photography
Awarded the Jerry Miller “Best in Show Photography” Award at Lazy Daze Arts and Crafts Festival in Cary, NC. I also got to meet Mr. Miller, who started the event in 1976. This annual event hosts 300 artists and is one of the largest shows I participate in. Not also is the show big, but the ribbon is just over 2 feet long too. Thanks to all of my fellow artists who took a moment to stop by my booth and express their congratulations. I appreciate you all.
"It is with great pleasure that we extend our heartfelt congratulations to you as one of the 2023 Jerry Miller Award Winners at this year's Lazy Daze Festival. Your outstanding artwork truly shone, and we are delighted to recognize your excellence.
This year's Lazy Daze Festival brought together a diverse range of talents and creativity, making the competition incredibly fierce. However, your dedication and passion for your craft have set you apart, making you one of the seven overall winners from various categories. This achievement is a testament to your hard work, talent, and commitment." - Jenna Kostka, Festivals & Events Supervisor

Under The Oaks Arts Festival 2022
Second Place - Fine Art
It is a meaningful delight to have received this award, especially since the judges recognized both the difficulty and artistry of my work. I appreciate that the judges took the time to comment on my photography’s composition, proportion and color accuracy. And as a bonus, I had two days on the beautiful Outer Banks of North Carolina, a harbor view from my booth, plus my “number one and only” there for the journey. Thanks to the entire crew that runs and promotes this event. Special thanks to my many artist-friends that I have come to know over the last decade. Your fellowship, guidance and unselfish generosity have made the difficulties of art show exhibitions, well worth the effort. I appreciate you all.

Chincoteague Island Decoy & Art Festival 2022
Best Photograph of Chincoteague/Assateague Award
One of the joys every winter is the arrival of our many waterfowl species to the mid-Atlantic. As the lakes and ponds freeze to the north, it pushes us this diverse family of birds, to visit for the season. Events that include both decoy carves and two dimensional wildlife artists, are always inviting to a special blend of art and nature lovers. This photography award will always be very special to me, because the magic of visiting Chincoteague Island has been a part of my life since childhood. Plus, the National Wildlife Refuge there is one of my very favorite places for wildlife photography. Congratulations to the amazing waterfowl decoy carvers/sculptors who also won awards. Special thanks to the Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce for hosting this long running event.

Second Place - Fine Art
On the northern end of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the Under the Oaks Arts Festival is held each year in the same park that is home to the historic Corolla Lighthouse. The show exhibits and eclectic array of art mediums from both local and distant artisans. I was pleasantly surprised and honored to receive this award at the artist’s reception and dinner. This venue has become an annual favorite on my schedule, because I get a harbor view from my booth that is shaded by the large Live Oaks Trees in the park.

Camera Club of Richmond "End of Year Competition" 2020
First Place - Wildlife - Black and White
This image was captured when I had the opportunity to photograph two different owl species, both on the same day. That had never happened before! I owe special thanks to Richard Hogue for sharing the information that pointed me in the right direction that special day. I also would like to express gratitude for both of the camera clubs I belong to: The Colonial Nature Photography Club and The Camera Club of Richmond. Being a member of these groups has enriched my photography experience, skills and opportunities. They are a great place to meet others with a similar interest and passion, as well as make friends too. I am greatly honored and grateful to have received this award. This is not just because of the stiff competition within this category, but because in my youth, my photography roots were sprouted in a basement darkroom, processing black and white film and prints.

Camera Club of Richmond "End of Year Competition" 2020
• Phillip Luce Award Trophy - Best Black and White Digital
• First Place - Landscape Black and White
I am honored to have been presented with this prestigious award, especially since it is a little outside of my usual genre. This is Cayuga Falls at Rickets Glen State Park in northeastern Pennsylvania. Waterfall photography is a completely different skill set from what I am use to, but it still is lots of fun. Even though the subject never once flew away, it is still very challenging technically. But most of all I enjoyed the artistic experience of composing such a foreign scene, finding various angles and visual flows. It was a real mind muscle flex, in an enjoyable sort of way. I like waterfall images with the silky water effect, yet with a tiny bit of movement texture. Come join us at the Camera Club of Richmond sometime, its an active club with great fellowship and photographers at ALL skill levels, beginner to pro.

Lynchburg Art Festival 2019
Creative Framing & Art Box Award |
What a Blessing at another of my favorite juried art exhibitions! Despite the intense labors of this single day event, Lynchburg Art Festival is always a regular on my annual fall schedule. Not also is this event held just a couple of miles from where I was born, but it is also on the grounds of my alma mater high school, plus I lived in the area for nearly fouty-five years. I always run into old friends, family, bird club members and teachers… It is always a nostalgic trip.

Seawall Art Show 2018
Fourth Place Overall
Juried Art Show Award! This kind of award has given me inspiration going forward as the business of the fall festival season approaches. Many folks may be surprised at the effort it takes for artists to participate in these events. Hours of logistics with the show jury process, travel, overnight accommodations, communication, and promotions. Not to mention the actual creation of artwork, plus pounds exhibit booths hauled, loaded and unloaded. Then there is the time spend actually at the shows and often away from friends and family. But for me, witnessing the connection that people have to art, makes it worth all. Sometimes that is as subtle as a short pause or smile. Special thanks to all the volunteers of The Seawall Art Show that make off of us feel like family!

A late decision to participate in this juried art show, turned out to be a good one.
